National Black Growers Council Welcomes Dawn A. Mellion, Ph.D., as New Executive Director

The National Black Growers Council (NBGC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Dawn A. Mellion as its new executive director.  Dr. Mellion brings a wealth of leadership experience in agriculture, academia, and farmer engagement, making her highly capable of leading the NBGC organization into the future.

Prior to joining NBGC, Dr. Mellion served as a consultant for the Extension Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports the Cooperative Extension Service at land-grant universities.   Dr. Mellion previously served as vice-chancellor for the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center.   As vice-chancellor, Dr. Mellion led extension and outreach programming to develop and sustain farm operations in Louisiana.

Dr. Mellion is recognized for her expertise in grants management, having secured funding and implemented various projects and programs to support agriculture.  Her dedication to advancing agriculture and advocating for underrepresented communities aligns perfectly with NBGC’s mission to improve the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of Black row-crop farmers. 

As executive director of NBGC, Dr. Mellion will lead the organization’s efforts to address critical issues facing Black farmers, promote sustainable agriculture practices, and advocate for policies that support the advancement of farmers in the agriculture industry.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Dawn Mellion as our new executive director,” said NBGC Board Chair P.J. Haynie, “Her extensive training in agriculture, her experience in leading organizations, and her passion for agriculture make her the ideal candidate to lead NBGC into a new era of growth and impact.”

In expressing her excitement about joining NBGC, Dr. Mellion said, “I am excited and honored to take on the role of executive director, and I look forward to collaborating with our members, partners, and other stakeholders to advance the interests of Black growers and to promote a more inclusive and sustainable agriculture industry.”
